Alphabet Q3 2026 Earnings: Cloud Doubles, Cash Flow Negative

Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings, released on October 28, 2026, showed Google Cloud revenue more than doubling to $30.7 billion while free cash flow fell to minus $9.1 billion. Total revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, but $51.4 billion of quarterly capital spending, mostly on AI data centers, used up more cash than the business produced. Shares fell about 10% in after-hours trading as diluted EPS of $2.12 came in well below estimates.

Cloud growth and a $561 billion backlog give management its case for the spending. The cash flow statement, now negative for two straight quarters, is the case against it.

Key takeaways

  • Google Cloud revenue grew 103% year over year to $30.7 billion, and Cloud operating income rose to $11.1 billion, a 36% margin (Alphabet Q3 2026 release).
  • Capital expenditures were $51.4 billion, more than double the $24.0 billion of Q3 2025, and free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion for the second quarter in a row.
  • Net income fell to $26.5 billion from $35.0 billion because other income swung from a $12.8 billion gain to an $8.2 billion loss (10-Q).
  • Google Cloud's revenue backlog reached $560.8 billion, and Alphabet expects to recognize just over 55% of its total backlog within 24 months.
  • Management kept 2026 capex guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion and said capex will rise significantly in 2027.

Against Wall Street expectations, revenue of $127.6 billion was slightly below the $127.9 billion consensus, and EPS of $2.12 was far below the roughly $3.02 analysts expected, according to a Gotrade summary citing S&P Global Visible Alpha and Investing.com.

Why did Google Cloud revenue double?

Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30,709 million in Q3 2026, from $15,157 million a year earlier. Alphabet attributes the growth to Google Cloud Platform, including enterprise AI infrastructure and AI solutions, on top of core cloud services. Its 10-Q also lists TPU systems as a product sale inside Google Cloud, so selling Google's own AI chips to customers now shows up in this line.

The acceleration over 2026 is steep:

QuarterGoogle Cloud revenueYear-over-year growthCloud operating income
Q1 2026$20.0B+63%$6.6B
Q2 2026$24.8B+82%$8.8B
Q3 2026$30.7B+103%$11.1B

Cloud operating income of $11.1 billion equals a 36% operating margin, up from about 24% a year ago. A common worry about AI infrastructure is that it sells at thin margins; so far, Google Cloud's margin has widened as revenue grew.

Alphabet also says its first-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times the rate a year ago, and the Gemini app has passed one billion users. For the models behind those numbers, see our coverage of Gemini 4 Carbon.

What is in the $561 billion Cloud backlog?

Google Cloud's revenue backlog, the contracted revenue Alphabet has not yet recognized, was $560.8 billion at the end of September, according to the Q3 10-Q. Alphabet's total backlog, which accountants call remaining performance obligations, was $567.7 billion.

Three details from the filings:

  • Alphabet expects to recognize just over 55% of the total backlog as revenue in the next 24 months, and the rest after that.
  • $16.8 billion of the backlog comes from a multi-year agreement with Crux AI, an unconsolidated joint venture that Alphabet reports as a related party.
  • The backlog was described as more than $460 billion at the end of Q1 2026 in an Alphabet filing from June, so it grew by roughly $100 billion in two quarters.

Management points to the backlog as evidence that customers have already signed for the capacity it is building. Nearly half of it, though, will not turn into revenue for more than two years.

Why is Alphabet's free cash flow negative?

Free cash flow is operating cash flow minus capital expenditures. In Q3 2026, operating cash flow fell 13% to $42.3 billion while capex more than doubled to $51.4 billion, leaving free cash flow at minus $9.1 billion. It was the second negative quarter in a row after minus $5.9 billion in Q2.

Trailing twelve-month free cash flow is still positive at $19.7 billion, down from $64.4 billion in the twelve months to March. Over the first nine months of 2026, Alphabet spent $132.0 billion on property and equipment, compared with $63.6 billion in the same period of 2025.

Alphabet has been raising outside money to cover the gap. In June it announced about $80 billion of equity offerings, including a $10 billion private placement with Berkshire Hathaway and a $40 billion at-the-market program set to start selling in Q3, and said it had raised more than $85 billion of debt over the prior year (Alphabet 8-K, June 1, 2026).

Rising depreciation is the other cost to track. Depreciation of property and equipment was $22.0 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up about 45% from $15.1 billion a year earlier, per the 10-Q. Every quarter of heavy capex adds to that line for years.

Why did net income fall when operating income rose?

Operating income rose 30% to $40.6 billion, so the drop in net income came from outside the business. Other income (expense), net, was a loss of $8.2 billion in Q3 2026 against a gain of $12.8 billion in Q3 2025, a swing of about $21 billion, according to the 10-Q. This line includes gains and losses on Alphabet's equity investments, which move with market prices.

So the EPS miss looks worse than the operating results. Operating income had a strong quarter; cash flow and net income did not, and the after-hours drop suggests investors weighed those more heavily this time.

What did Alphabet say about capex for 2026 and 2027?

CFO Anat Ashkenazi said on the earnings call that full-year 2026 capex guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion is unchanged, and that Alphabet expects capex to increase significantly in 2027, with details on the Q4 call (Alphabet Q3 2026 earnings call). With $132.0 billion spent through September, the guidance implies roughly $63 billion to $73 billion in Q4, another record quarter.

CEO Sundar Pichai framed the quarter around scale: "We had a strong quarter and are now on a half-trillion dollar revenue run rate."

Meta's Q3 report turned its free cash flow negative on AI spending, as we covered in Meta Q3 2026 earnings, and memory suppliers are the direct beneficiaries, as SK hynix's record Q3 showed.

What to watch next

Four numbers to track over the next few quarters:

  1. Google Cloud growth and margin. A 103% growth rate on a $30 billion base sets a high bar for Q4.
  2. The 2027 capex figure Alphabet gives in its Q4 report.
  3. Free cash flow. A third negative quarter would mean Alphabet keeps leaning on equity and debt to fund capex.
  4. Depreciation growth, which will pressure operating margins as new data centers come online.
